Every lean is a message about the post line, and the shape of it tells you which message. A single tilted section between two straight ones is one or two failed posts, full stop. Confirm the message with your hands: push each post in the leaning run toward the lean. Failed posts pivot at the grade line; sound ones push back. Count the pivots and photograph them, because that count is the entire scope of the rescue, and it’s usually a smaller number than the lean’s drama suggested.
One measurement worth taking before anyone quotes you: sight down the top rail from the fence’s end. A line that’s straight except for the dip over the failed posts confirms the panels themselves are sound and re-hangable, which is most of the rescue’s economics right there.
The soil underneath deserves one paragraph, because it explains the lean’s timing. Not directly, but it does load its neighbors. Panels attached to a failed post transfer wind stress to the adjacent posts, which ages them ahead of schedule, and a lean left standing through a storm season tends to grow. Because the failure lives at and below the grade line, where looking can’t reach. A post can be clean and solid at eye level, while the buried portion has rotted or the footing has loosened in the clay.
